Benson & Bingham is pleased to announce that Felipe Hernandez has been awarded the grand prize of $2,000 as the winner of the First Annual Benson & Bingham Scholarship. Mr. Hernandez is an undergraduate from the University of California at Irvine and has been accepted to Harvard Law, and partners Joe Benson and Ben Bingham are excited to help a fellow law enthusiast with his pursuit of a legal degree.
The firm received 24 submissions from a diverse set of applicants across the United States covering all five topics, although the majority of applicants chose to comment on The future of driver-less cars and how this will affect the field of personal injury, including our winner Mr. Hernandez. The topic is obviously very relevant in this day and age, and subsequently the applicants were drawn to this topic as well. Additionally, four applicants chose to write about How technology will affect the practice of law, and the firm received some very diverse as well as thought provocative essays on this subject as well.

“Joe and I were truly impressed with the essays we received from our first scholarship offer. Having read all 24 applications, I am confident the future of law in this country is in great hands. While it was difficult to select a winner, we found Mr. Hernandez’s essay to not only be original and thought provoking, but very well supported with source materials as well. Due to the quantity of exceptional essays received, Joe and I are currently discussing the addition of several runner-up awards to honor some of the other applicants’ efforts.
