Bill in State Legislature Aims to Reduce Motorcycle Accidents in Las Vegas
Motorcycle riders love Nevada. The climate – warm, dry, and lovely open spaces – make it an ideal place for many riders. Nevada, however, does not have one critical thing that would cut down on motorcycles being rear ended in injury accidents in Southern Nevada: lane splitting. Many states, including California, allow motorcycle riders to skip through traffic by sharing lanes with cars. This prevents motorcycle riders from being rear ended in stop and go traffic, which can cause serious injury even if the accident only occurs at 5 or 10 miles per hour. If a member of the Nevada State Assembly has his way, though, this could change. This assemblyman has proposed allowing lane sharing in Nevada, a measure aimed at lowering motorcycle accidents in Las Vegas. The bill, Assembly Bill 236, has already passed through half of the Nevada State Legislature, having cleared the Nevada State Assembly with strong support from both political parties, garnering 35 “yea” votes out of a possible 42. It likely had to do with a broad base of support, including both individual citizens as well as groups of motorcycle enthusiasts and representatives of the Nevada Department of Public Safety. All these groups and individuals testified, at least in part, that this measure would lower motorcycle accidents in the Las Vegas Valley, among other places. It was also stressed that motorcycle riders can still get speeding tickets in Las Vegas for going too fast while lane splitting; the bill specifically says you have to keep it to 10 miles per hour or less above the speed the other traffic is moving. The bill still has to pass through the Nevada State Senate and be signed by the Governor before it becomes law.
Even though lane splitting may soon be legal, motorcycle injury accidents in the Las Vegas area will still happen.
